Il est essentiel pour la reproduction; quelques études démontrent qu’une carence en sélénium aboutit à l’infertilité. Les spermatozoïdes contiennent de grandes quantités de sélénium. Des montants considérables sont perdus pendant les rapports sexuels et pour cette raison, le sélénium est plus nécessaire pour les hommes que pour les femmes.
